Toronto Film School Students Shine at Festival of Films
It can be difficult to see your own work on the big screen, but Christopher Lane, the Coordinator of the Film Production program at Toronto Film School said the reward comes when the audience laughs, gasps or is surprised at the right moment. That, he said, was exactly what happened at the second annual Toronto Film School Festival of Films.
“It is really nerve racking for the filmmaker to see it like that,” Lane said. “But what is rewarding, and we saw it today, was moments when people laughed in the right spot or were shocked at something that happened in the film at the right spot.”
On August 28 the Toronto Film School hosted the Festival of Films at the Cineplex Odeon Cinemas at Yonge Dundas Square. The full day festival saw the screening of 42 films, music videos, documentaries and commercials, which where written, directed, produced and starred in by Toronto Film School students.
“I think it is great that a bunch of independent artists and student filmmakers can get together to show that they are more than just students,” said Evan Mead, who graduated from the Toronto Film School’s Film Production program in 2013.
That evening, awards were handed out for accolades such as best director, best film and best screenplay. The award winners were:
Best Director: March Mercanti for “Bow to Your Prince”
Best Producer: Thao Nguyen for “My Missing Piece”
Best Screenplay: Elene Mekete for “Forever and 2 Days”
Best Director of Cinematography: Matthew P.H. Read for “Selected”
Best Performance by a Female: Jehan Hashim for “Pick Orchid”
Best Performance by a Male: Bruno Pine for “Man And Knife”
Best Editing: Cody Marcotte for “Dr. Disastro”
Best Art Director: Nitten Patel for “Forever And 2 Days”
Best Picture Award: Alexa Mitchell & Thao Nguyen for “Selected”
Best Sound Design: Paul Viret for his body of work
Best Music Video: Paratheep Ka for “Formula Rush”
Best Commercial: Cameron Phair for “Very Valero”
Best Documentary: Joao Pacifer for “Going For The Gold”
