Admission requirements

– Record a video explaining why you want to attend TFS​.

– Submit via unlisted YouTube link.

– Demonstrate clear audio, proper lighting, and thoughtful framing​.

– Present yourself authentically in a professional but casual manner (be yourself!).

– Choose one of three assigned stories (comedy, drama, or horror)​.

– Create original photographs using your smartphone or DSLR camera​.

– Tell the complete story through images alone, without text​.

– Arrange images on the TFS-provided template and submit as PDF​.

– Shoot all images in horizontal/widescreen format​.

– 1-2 minute explanation of who you are (introduction, hobbies, interests, past educational experiences, where you live), your personal story, what/who inspired you to get into acting, and why you want to be an acting student at Toronto Film School.

– Be yourself and speak from the heart. Do not read your personal video off a sheet. This is a video to show yourself and your authentic personality.

– 1-2 minute English monologue performance from a play, movie, or TV show. The monologue is a continuous dialogue or speech from 1 character only. Find a monologue that is suitable to you and shows emotional range.

– It must be fully memorized.

– Stand 8 to 10 feet back from your camera and do NOT read your monologue, do NOT look into the camera lens. Play the monologue to an eyeline just off camera. Ensure that the light is in front of your body rather than behind. Make sure the volume is up.

– Please submit the videos by uploading them to YouTube or Vimeo and providing the link to your Admissions Advisor.

Submit a 1-page essay (250-500 words, 12pt font size) describing your story, why you want to be an actor, and why you would like to study at Toronto Film School.

– Two creative writing pieces.​

– Examples: a short story (in prose). A short film script. A comedic sketch.

– Minimum 2 pages each, in 12-point font for prose documents. Minimum 5 pages each, in 12-point font for anything written using a screenwriting program or screenplay format.

Show us your creativity.

Applicants may submit either a digital art portfolio or a game design document, or both:​

– Art Portfolio: Minimum of three original works (e.g., sketches, drawings, 3D models, digital art, animations, or game assets). Include brief descriptions for each piece.​

– Game Design Document: 2–3 pages outlining a game concept, including premise, core mechanics, art direction, and target audience.​

Each submission should reflect creativity and passion for game development.​

Tell us why you want to create games.​

Submit a short essay (100–300 words) describing your interest in game design, art and animation, what inspires you creatively, and your career goals.​

One or more Grade 12 courses in:​

– Advanced Functions (MHF4U)​

– Math for College Technology (MCT4C)​

– Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U)

Equivalent courses accepted. ​

– Applicants that do not possess the requirements listed on the left can complete a Math Assessment Test. The Assessment Test will include topics in trigonometry, geometry and algebra.

– Applicants completing the Math Assessment Test remotely will be required to enable video and record their screen throughout the test. The screen recording will need to be shared with the assessment supervisor.​

We want to see your visual communication skills. Submit a digital PDF portfolio of at least two visual communication pieces neatly displayed. Keep it to one piece per category; suggestions are for guidance only:​

– Sample of your sketches or drawings.​

– Sample(s) of any graphic design work you have already done​.

– Design a book cover – submit a rough draft or composite sketch of your design for a book cover (feel free to use any book)​.

– Design a website – submit a rough draft or composite sketch of your design for a website​.

– Write a critique (300-500 words) about any existing editorial design (newspaper or magazine layout), outlining how the layout communicates through the use of space, colour, fonts and shape. We’re interested in your awareness level for noticing design and visual communication.​

– Sample of Social Media posts you have created​.

Make sure your PDF portfolio has your name on each page and includes a 1-2 sentence explanation of all design samples. Please note portfolios will not be returned.​

We want to hear your thoughts on the graphic design industry. Please submit a short essay (300–500 words) explaining why you are interested in a career in the graphic design industry, including aspects of the graphic design industry that interest you and your career goals. We’ll be looking for your passion for graphic design and any related hobbies, part time jobs, and/or coursework. Please note essays will not be returned.​
