Acting Grad Ken Harrower in the News!

Our students go about their programs with determination and passion. We know each one has a story and a motivation for choosing an intensive, fast-paced curriculum to achieve their dreams as quickly as possible. And we are honoured to be the instructors, mentors and colleagues throughout this journey. Everyone once in a while, one of our talented students is able to share their story on a wider scale. One such story is that of Ken Harrower, who was recently the subject of an interview with CBC News’ Jeff Semple. A recent graduate of the Acting for Film, TV and Theatre program, he is unique in many ways. Acting chops aside (and he’s got plenty) his personal life has a message that is meant to be heard by others and is meant to inspire.

Ken Harrower’s passion for acting has overcome certain challenges he faces on a daily basis. Ken was born with a rare disorder that has him confined to a wheelchair. He grew up in various hospitals, foster care and an institution. Once legally an adult, he boldly moved east from his hometown in Manitoba to Toronto. Homeless and jobless, he stayed in a shelter for a short time before a local newspaper shared his courageous story. He received enough donations to afford an electric wheelchair and furniture for his own apartment. He currently lives independently in downtown Toronto. His strength of spirit and character is what truly touches people, and he is fulfilling a dream that will allow him to give back to whole audiences.

As the oldest student to study at the Toronto Film School, he enriches his performances with true grit and a life of trying experiences. His passion is hard to miss. Be sure to look for Ken in an Ontario PSA for better rights and more independence for people with disabilities. We look forward to watching Ken’s career take off.
