Grad off to LA and Much More from Toronto Film School’s Writing Program
As always, I’d like to start the term by giving you the latest news from the Writing For Film & Television Program.
2016 Grad Mika Rekai’s currently untitled comedy feature has been accepted into the Telefilm CFC Comedy Exchange. As a part of the program, Mika will be set up with a mentor/story editor and flown to LA in March for pitch and packaging meetings. Producing the project isWriting For Film & Television / Film Production Instructor Jordan Walker, who saw Mika’s talent as her teacher and optioned the project from her early last year.
Writing For Film & Television /Film Production Instructor Kyle Muir continues to have success in his video game escapade at Ubisoft Los Angeles. Ubisoft has extended Kyle’s contract yet again, this time until March – but Kyle is excited to return to TFS for Spring Term. Kyle also joins me in having recently sold a sitcom to Fox Studios, with development at Fox TV. Kyle’s series is currently untitled, but is about ‘an idiot who inherits a cult from his dead uncle’. It is being produced by Spelthorne Community Television, Sacha Baron Cohen’s production company.
Writing For Film & Television Instructor Fern Levitt has been having huge success with her Documentary Sled Dogs – about the mistreatment of dogs in the mushing community. Sled Dogs debuted at the Whistler Film Festival where it won Best Documentary, Fern winning Best Female Director. Sled Dogs continues to make waves at festivals worldwide, with articles suggesting it will do to the mushing community what Blackfish did to SeaWorld.
And Writing For Film & Television Instructor Matt Miller’s project Nirvanna The Band The Show has been having great success of late. Just recently, Nirvanna took the 2nd Place Audience Award at Austin Fantastic Fest. The project is a comedy, about a two-person Toronto band that tries to book a gig at their favorite city venue. Nirvanna stars Matt Johnson, Miller’s partner in feature hits The Dirties and Operation Avalanche.
Finally, soon-to-be Writing For Film & Television Grad Krystyna Byers has received an internship with Gabriel Napora at Triton Films. Triton specializes in horror and sci-fi content, and Krystyna will be working as a story editor, preparing already-green-lit projects for production.
