Toronto Film School Takes on TIFF | Your Guide to TFS-Related Films at the 2022 Festival

Toronto Film School will be taking the Toronto International Film Festival by storm this year, with at least eight members of our alumni and faculty community involved in projects celebrating their premieres at the 2022 festival.
Here’s your guide to all the TFS-related screenings taking place at over the course of the Sept. 8-18 event:
Soft
Produced by 2012 Film Production grad Danny Sedore, this matter-of-fact drama follows three queer Toronto kids whose friendship is tested over one pivotal summer by divided loyalties, differing social situations, and anger issues.

So Much Tenderness
Class of 2019 Acting for Film, TV & the Theatre grad Natalia Aranguren was named one of this year’s TIFF Rising Stars in recognition of her role in Lina Rodríguez’s film about a Colombian environmental lawyer who flees to Canada after the death of her husband, only to find her attempt at a new life challenged when she discovers that the past is not so easily left behind.

Bones of Crows
Acting for Film, TV & the Theatre faculty member John Tench appears in this epic account of the life of Cree matriarch Aline Spears, which serves as both a powerful indictment of the abuse of Indigenous peoples, as well as a stirring story of resilience and resistance.

Fixation
Film Production grads Jessica Smith (2017), Camille Lortie (2018) and Genevieve Guerin (2019) all worked on the set of this feature thriller that tells the story of a young woman who undergoes psychiatric evaluation before her sentencing in an unusual murder trial. Lortie worked as the 2nd AD, Smith as the 3rd AD, and Guerin as the Production Coordinator.

North of Normal
Camille Lortie also served as 2nd AD in this adaptation of Cea Sunrise Person’s 2014 memoir of the same name, which details the author’s counterculture youth in the wilds of 1970s Western Canada.

The Young Arsonists
Class of 2017 Film Production alumnus Romanesh Reynoso worked as a gaffer on the set of this haunting feature set in 1980s rural Canada, about a group of teenage girls whose relationships with one another are both strengthened and tested over the course of a summer.

The End of Sex
Set decorated by Class of 2018 Film Production grad Michael Alexander Uccello, this Sean Garrity-directed comedy follows a married couple (played by Emily Hampshire and Jonas Chernick) making increasingly wild attempts to recapture the magic of their now-routine marriage.
