Reconsidering His Options | Adam May’s Online Writing for Film & Television Story

After carefully considering his career options for more than a decade, Adam May decided to enrol in Toronto Film School Online’s Writing for Film & Television – and he hasn’t looked back.

“My breathtaking ability to consider and reconsider the best life plan for myself mercifully come to a head right around my 30th birthday,” said the Orillia native, who’s “obsessed” with movies and sports.

“After a plethora of adventures and attempts to dip my toes into different fields, I knew two things about myself: I was a cinephile that (for better or worse) liked to get my thoughts on paper.”

He enrolled at TFS shortly thereafter, and is now proud to represent the Online Writing for Film & TV program as this year’s valedictorian – an accomplishment he credits to advice of his fellow students and the direction and patience of his instructors.

“It is my hope that the next group of students embrace their upcoming journey, forge new relationships and do everything in their power to make this path a reality,” he said.

May recently sat down to reflect on his time at Toronto Film School, his passion for screenwriting, and his plans for the future. Here’s what he had to say:

What brought you to Toronto Film School? Where were you in life when you decided to continue your studies with us?

It took longer than I care to admit for me to realize that I need to be excited about what I do. I don’t have the mental capacity to go on autopilot day in and day out for a job, and I needed to stop caring what society deemed acceptable for my life. That’s when I realized TFS was perfect for me. I was able to continue working, while pursuing what I truly wanted within my schedule.

What made you decide to pursue your passion for Writing for Film & TV?

Being a cinephile that enjoys visual storytelling and (for better or worse) getting my thoughts on paper, screenwriting fit like a glove.

What is the most important thing you’re taking away from your studies at TFS?

TFS was imperative towards helping me become a more well-rounded, prepared and patient screenwriter. The relationships I’ve forged with fellow students and the direction and advice I’ve received from instructors (in particular Adam Till) have helped lay the groundwork for me to move forward.

What are your plans after graduation both immediate and long term?

My plans are to continue writing. Currently I’m a copywriter, but my foundation from TFS has opened a lot of doors that would’ve otherwise been more difficult for me to walk through.

If you offered one piece of advice to an incoming student, what would that be?

Do not attempt to do this on your own. You need to be able to develop relationships with fellow writers that you trust (and consider their opinions), and also with people that can help steer you in the right direction. TFS can help with both.
