Toronto Film School Acting for Film, TV & the Theatre students will tackle Pulitzer Prize-winning author Carol Shields’ 1990 play Departures & Arrivals next week at the Papermill Theatre.
Directed by Jonathan Whittaker, the 75-minute play is set in an airport lounge, and, through a series of vignettes, captures a spectrum of travelers awakening to contemporary limbo.
“There is not a day that goes by that we are not off to somewhere or coming from something. All these comings and goings have a direct impact on our daily lives and the lives of others we encounter. Some of those encounters may affect us briefly, others more profoundly,” said Whittaker.
“A terminal, be it an airport, subway, train station or port allows for a hodgepodge of personal interactions where we experience new beginnings, endings, frustrations, revelations, joys, hopes and heartaches. A microcosm of life if we choose to take the time to take it in.”

Departures & Arrivals, which is stage managed by John Lagura, will take to the stage at the Papermill Theatre for a three-performance run on March 20, 21 and 22 as follows:
- Wednesday, March 20 at 9 p.m.
- Thursday, March 21 at 7 p.m.
- Friday, March 22 at 9 p.m.
The Papermill Theatre is located at Todmorden Mills, 67 Pottery Rd. Tickets are free and available at the door.
